Every addict has this feeling that perhaps, just perhaps they can simply stop practicing their vice of choice. If they are on drugs, they figure that they can just quit them. And if they are an alcoholic, they figure that they can simply drop the drink and never pick it up again. Even the online addicts may want to separate themselves from their wireless internet providers all at once. The notion of quitting cold turkey works on a lot of different levels. For one, it works along with the craziness that characterizes every kind of addiction, in which the world seems to work in ways that it realistically does not. For another thing, it works along with the ego mania that is often one of the fundamental parts of the addict’s life. After all, what is an addict without a crazy, delusional belief that they are not actually addicted to anything, and that their life is completely under their own control? But can cold turkey actually work?

In theory, all a person has got to do is stop practicing their vice of choice, and things will eventually get back to normal. Of course, a person who has a vice inevitably has an underlying problem which will ultimately cause them to go back into some kind of a vice (whether the one that they used to use, or an entirely new one) if they do not ultimately own up to the real problem underneath it all. And since most addicts are not psychologically capable of doing all of that on their own, it is most likely not going to work that way.

And naturally, if they continue to have the same social network (which almost always consists of other addicts that they can compare themselves to), quitting cold turkey is more like taking a short break from the vice. After all, when every other phone call is another invitation to use, the temptation is simply too great to refuse. And why would they? Between the physical discomfort of withdrawal, and the distorted view of the world that they have acquired through the regular practice of their vice, the world is far too scary to face without their fix.

Drug problems have always been an issue in society. Through each generation, new drugs get introduced into the mainstream that become the most popular drug of choice among the masses. The reasons why people turn to drugs varies depending on a number of factors, the most prominent being the environmental factors they grow up surrounded in. In modern society, street drugs have been the most widely abused type of drugs; consisting of drugs like cocaine and marijuana. However, over the past decade, a new drug of choice has begun moving in and replacing these street drugs; prescription medication.

Prescription medication abuse is becoming an epidemic in modern society, plaguing people of all ages. The main issue surrounding this growing problem is the fact that drugs such as painkillers are extremely easy to get. Doctors have begun blindly prescribing these medications to people, without considering and or caring about the long-term effects. Unfortunately, many of the people who abuse prescription drugs are older people who lack the strength to ween themselves off, and are thus dependent on them for the rest of their lives.

Aside from the carelessness in these drugs being prescribed so often, they are also widely available online. Many people who get prescription drugs through illegal means sell them online through websites that seem legitimate. Accredited firms such as kissinsights.com that provide valuable web development tools are used to create these easy to navigate websites for prospective customers. Regardless of the awareness of this growing problem, the demand for prescription drugs is insatiable, and there is very little being done to stop the abuse.

Many people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol require the use of a rehabilitation center to overcome the habit they have formed. Drugs and alcohol can change the chemical makeup of the brain and the rehab center will help balance those chemicals so you can return back to a normal lifestyle. However, if you are unfamiliar with the drug or alcohol rehabilitation center you may have many questions that need to be answered before you enter a treatment facility.

Here’s a look at the most commonly asked questions people have about drug or alcohol rehabilitation centers.

How Much Will These Programs Cost Me?

Image via Wikipedia

The average cost for drug rehab can vary depending upon the type of treatment and location of the center. Some government rehab centers offer the program for free or reduced rates, while private rehab centers can cost anywhere from $14,000 all the way up to $30,000.

How Long Will I Be There?

The length of stay at a drug or alcohol rehabilitation center will depend upon the course of treatment your counselors and health care professionals to turn. Some rehab stays can be as short as two to three weeks, while others can up to 60 to 90 days. If necessary means you can attend online classes regarding rehab instruction. Research has shown that most successful rehab programs last 30+ days so that is the average you will find when researching for centers.

Will My Family Be Involved?

Family and friends support systems are important when you are in a drug or alcohol rehabilitation center. However, having family and friends involved is up to you and you can opt to not have them involved at all.

The image-handling and medical-archiving system PACS has many capabilities and is especially flexible in the many image types it handles. Whatever kind of test is needed in a patient’s care, PACS is likely able to store the resultant image and make it available to the appropriate medical staff. Here are some examples of tests the results of which may be captures by PACS:

Ultrasound – sound waves generate a visual depiction of structures under the skin; commonly used to detect or examine pregnancy.

Magnetic Resonance (MRI) – magnetic waves indicate internal structures with great detail.

Positron emission tomography – a nuclear imaging technique that creates a 3D image of active bodily processes.

Computed tomography – uses two X-rays to craft a 3D depiction of an object’s insides.

Endoscopy – a device called an endoscope is inserted directly into an organ for a first-hand look around.

Mammograms – use X-rays to examine women’s breasts to check for cancer and other potential medical problems.

There are many more such examples. PACS system strengths lie in the way it can not only archive these images but also distribute them to anyone on the network with the appropriate authorization, as opposed to the old method of carrying hard copies around.

The PACS system is used for four primary functions. It replaces physical copies of images, greatly reducing waste and inefficiency. It allows remote access to files, which makes for faster response times. It serves as an electronic image integration platform, which means it helps radiology images interface with images from other automated systems. Finally, radiology departments often use PACS to control the patient exam workflow.

Meditation dates back thousands of years and gradually spread through Asia, where it all began. The many benefits of this art has since become legendary and meditation centers have sprung up all across the United States. There are numerous meditation techniques: focusing on an object like a flame, breathing exercises, or Tai Chi (considered a meditation through movement). All are known to create an inner peace in the individual that practices it.

Due to that fact, meditation has a huge effect on people suffering from mental health conditions. Many illnesses of the mind are due to an unbalanced chemical reaction in the brain. High stress levels add to the symptoms of individuals dealing with these types of afflictions. Therapy and medication used to be the standard procedure when dealing with mental health patients but this Asian form of healing is quickly becoming the better choice. Studies have shown meditation can actually reprogram the delicate wavelengths and structure of the brain, helping thousands of people overcome illnesses that only medication could cure before. As with all holistic methods, it is always important to check with a professional doctor before proceeding but even they agree about the positive effect.

It’s easy to do- just find a quiet place to sit and try any of the techniques that fit the individual. There’s no worry if one is uncertain of how to start and don’t have the funds to do classes. YouTube has thousands of videos on how to meditate and all the ways to do it. If there are any doubts that meditation is effective, use KISSinsights site to do an online survey for the link between meditation and mental health. There are numerous true life accounts from people it’s worked for.

Eating Disorders affect millions of teens every day. The most popular ones are Anorexia and Bulimia. While there are differences between the two, both are detrimental to a girl’s health and psychological mindset.

Anorexia is the easily spotted disorder because it entails the girl starving herself due to her fear of getting fat. Even when they whittle down to 80 pounds, they still see a obese girl when they look in the mirror. Anorexics never eat in front of people which is another sign a girl may be subjecting her body to this disorder. Ait its worst, Anorexia causes weakness, shrunken bones, and stunted growth.

Bulimia consists of a girl “binging and purging”. In essence, eating a large amount of food at one time and going to the bathroom to throw it all up. They are also known to overuse laxatives so the food never stays in their body for long. What sets them apart from Anorexics is they often sustain their normal body weight.

Both types of women are dealing with serious depression and extreme fear of weight gain. Much of this fear has to do with the American culture and media. The ideal image is the skinny model type who receives all the attention because of her beauty. This woman is now set as the perfect body to attain to, which creates an obsession in teens to achieve that goal. Family pressure to be perfect is a huge factor, as well.

A strong support system and therapy can bring a woman with an eating disorder back to health- both mental and physical.

As with most addictions, Alcoholism is both a cause and effect of depression and anxiety in a person’s life. Let’s say a man goes for a drink after work to alleviate his stressful day. Alcohol releases the chemical in your brain indicating pleasure so there is a certain level of joy that comes with every sip of a drink. Flas forward to a week later, the same man is drinking, except now

One of the ongoing debates in today’s society are the benefits of herbal supplements versus medicine. In the ever changing world, people are starting to question whether pharmaceutical drugs are doing more harm than good. Everyone is going organic, from food to beauty products, and supplements are a big part of that. Holistic doctors are in high demand to ail diseases like diabetes, immune deficiency, even more severe ailments like bipolar disorder. Illnesses are formed due to toxins in the body and medication adds more. They may cure one disease but the side effects could activate another. Scientific studies have shown that the body can heal itself if it is working at an optimum level, which include proper nutrients and vitamins to keep up health.

Advocates of this organic lifestyle are quick to point out how Mother Nature has provided for people for thousands of years. In their eyes, the use of drugs has made human’s health worse and slowly poisons the body. Why take synthetic drugs when certain herbs can resolve the problems and strengthen the body, especially when paired with a healthy diet and exercise?

Medical doctors disagree with this theory, stating that many people aren’t aware of the side effects these supplements may have. Also, they aren’t approved by an association like drugs are so can’t be guaranteed not to harm someone more. Then there are the fake supplements being sold to unsuspecting citizens, increasing the symptoms and making things worse. Not to mention that many diseases don’t have a supplemental cure. People with kidney or liver problems shouldn’t take herbal pills or liquids without consulting a medical professional first. Doctors further note that there are available online courses which depicts that medicinal drugs often have herbal extracts as its base and are perfected in the lab.

If one is considering taking the organic road, be sure to check with a doctor before taking the first step.

Epilepsy is an interesting disease because it isn’t classified as one, but rather a symptom of a current or past problem. It often occurs after a head trauma: brain swelling from an accident, a seizure brought on as a child from a high fever, etc. Events like these would change the actual brain synapses and create seizures of different varieties depending on what part of the brain is affected. Complex seizures are the ones people experience the most. Grand Mal seizures cause full body convulsions and lead to tongue biting and loss of consciousness. A Petit Mal brings on black outs, and broken connection between muscular movement and the mind. These are often suffered by children and can change once their body chemistry changes, for instance when a girl goes through puberty.

Medication is available to stave off seizures. Depakote was prescribed back in the 90s but there were very bad side effects: depressions, weight gain, thoughts of suicide. The newest epilepsy drug, Lamictal, has far better results and is successful in giving patients a chance at a normal life. While a few children may grow out of their epilepsy, for most it’s a life long battle and can limit the quality of life in certain ways. Epilepsy drugs are expensive and insurance companies don’t cover them or the illness, citing it a “pre existing disorder”. Without insurance, Lamictal can cost anywhere from 400-500 dollars a month. Companies with insurance benefits do cover the medicine but if one doesn’t have that luxury, there are programs available to help.

Check with the local city hospital about medical aid for those with low income. Many give cards to ensure you get doctor visits and medication at a drastically low rate.

Epilepsy Foundations are in numerous cities in the world. Depending on the financial state of the local government, they may pay for your medication, like the Epilepsy Foundation in Tampa, FL. In this economy, many are there for emotional support and facts on the illness to help patients and the families deal with the day to day routine.

In 2002, a popular show called Monk got rave reviews. A police detective who helps solve crimes by noticing little things everyone else on the scene may be missed. While it was a comedy, it centered around a darker issue. Monk had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), evident from the opening credits when the camera shows him walking along touching every lamp post he walks by. This is one of the tell tale signs of an OCD person.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder where the person has negative thoughts and feelings that create obsessive and repetitive behavior. Some feel if they don’t wash their hands repeatedly, they will catch germs and become ill. Others use math, counting to a certain number before leaving the house or, like Monk, touching a fence or lamp post in a row.

Though the disease normally afflicts adults in their late twenties, many children are diagnosed every day. While adults are suggested anti depressant medication, sometimes paired with a mild antipsychotic drug, children must find les harmful methods. The medications can be hard on a grown up’s body and mind, let alone a kid’s.

OCD is difficult not only for the victims but for the families, too. Those afflicted with the disease have no control over their actions as the problem stems from how the mind processes fear and doubt. So when someone gets frustrated and tells a patient they can get over it on their own, they don’t understand the intricacies of the disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a huge part of overcoming OCD. This form of help centers on teaching the patient how to deal with the anxiety and top the obsessive actions. UNlike regular therapy, where you talk about your fears and a therapist tells you how to feel, Cognitive therapy is an interactive exercise where both patient and therapist work together to battle the disease and be healthy again.

For families dealing with the effects, a non-profit organization called the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation (IOCDF) is available for those trying to find ways to cope and understand it.

There are many treatments for mental health issues. Some issues can be solved by talk therapy. In talk therapy, you go to a qualified practitioner who will help you talk out your issue or concerns. This can be a great way to get things off of your chest so that you can begin the healing process. In some cases, group therapy is used instead of individual talk therapy.

Going to group sessions where everyone basically has the same issue is a great way to gain perspective, express yourself, and get on a path to healing. However, this is not ideal for everyone because some people will shut down in a group environment. If you are a private person who is not open to sharing, then private talk therapy at a clinic would be a better option for treating mental health issues than a group therapy session.

Also, sometimes group therapy just won’t work for the type of mental health condition you have. That is okay and it doesn’t make you a failure. That just means it is time to try something else. Your health practitioner at your hospital or clinic will be able to guide you.

Medication is another option. In order to get medication to treat a mental health issue, you have to be seeing a psychiatrist or other qualified medical professional that can prescribe drugs. Medications are not ideal for everyone. Every medication has a side effect and depending on your age, lifestyle, and health status there may or may not be an appropriate medication to treat your mental health condition.

When you are sick with the common cold, the best thing for your care & cure is to seek appropriate treatment. You don’t necessarily have to go to a clinic or hospital when you have a cold. But if you have other health conditions that are serious, you may want to get professional help. You don’t want to do anything that will aggravate your chronic health condition.

There are a lot of drugstore medicines that can provide you with a form of treatment, but there are many other options. The first step to your care & cure is to make sure you are well rested. When you have the common cold, you want to get enough rest so that you will feel better sooner. If you keep up with your same pace, it’s going to take longer to feel better, and you are going to have to keep seeking out treatments.

The next thing you want to do is drink plenty of fluids. If you are sick then there are toxins built up in your body. Drinking plenty of fresh and clean water will help flush out these toxins so that you can be on your way to better health.

The best treatment for the common cold is to prevent it. Make sure you are washing your hands frequently so that germs do not spread. Take time to boost your immune system by getting plenty of vitamin C and vitamin D. And most importantly, try to stay away from people who are sick. If more people adopted this attitude, germs would not spread so quickly.

Addictions are not good for your mental health. They can cause you to damage your relationships with friends and family, perform poorly at work, and really interfere with living your life.

Some people think that addictions to things like shoes, electronics, and other consumer goods are not a big deal because compared to things like drugs and alcohol; consumer goods appear to be very minor. But one must always consider that when you are spending an excessive amount of time or money on certain things; you are neglecting something else.

If you are spending all of your money on shoes, then you are probably not paying all of your bills, or you are acquiring debt that you may not be able to pay off. If you are spending all your time playing video games; then you can’t possibly be spending quality time with your friends and family. So indeed, addictions that seem minor can cause real damage. You don’t want to walk around with addictive behaviors that are having a negative impact on your life.

Some would say that mental health issues cause addictions, and that obsessive behaviors are due to some sort of deficiency. Whatever the cause is, the best course of action is to seek help at a clinic, hospital, or rehab facility. A licensed professional can help you sort out the source of your addiction, and come up with a plan for beating it. You don’t have to live in a world where your addictions are overtaking your life. There is help out there if you take the first step to get it.

The world of the addict is almost always one where there is very little stability to be had. For most addicts, they do not come out of especially happy childhoods, and they often suffered some form of abuse as a child. While this can be a call to them to start something far better when they have children of their own, far too often the addict will subconsciously work to rebuild the bad parts of their childhoods through their choice of mate. This does very little to add any stability, and a cycle repeats itself once again. Intense amounts of fighting, more addictive behavior and typically a combination of abuse and neglect characterize how many addicts create their own family structures. But underneath it all, is family capable of helping a person to get into a healthier state of life, even if the family itself has a lot of problems?

In a lot of cases, a family does love its members, even if there are a lot of problems which stack on top of the group of them. While there are some instances in which a loving, supportive family has done a lot to help an addicted member of its ranks to get better, this is a very rare occurrence. After all, for the most part families have very little as far as resources that can help with a person’s addiction. Very few families have the psychologists and addiction specialists among them who could render constructive help.

In addition to this, most of the families that addicts come out of are riddled with problems which will forever go unsolved. While it might seem nihilistic to say this, for a lot of families the addict is one of the more well adjusted people, since they are internalizing their problems (through hurting themselves) as opposed to lashing out from whatever internal problems bubble underneath the surface. For many of these people, looking to their families for help (who may also have ample vices of their own) would be rather like asking a drowning man to give you swimming lessons, and equally ineffective.

For far too many people who suffer from some form of mental illness, there are a lot of different options. But in spite of this plethora of different potential options, the most common response to noticing (or having someone else notice) that you have some kind of mental illness symptoms is to go into denial and do nothing about it. While this might be an effective way to mask the problem for a little while, after a long enough time the illness is going to progress to the level where you are no longer going to be able to hide your problem. And by that point, you may be doing things that are outside of your conscious control, or even illegal things that deviate from societal norms. After everything, the stigma which surrounds mental illnesses has done a lot of damage to people who may have been able to get help far sooner, and avoid a lot of the resulting problems.

The sooner you notice symptoms which might indicate that a mental illness is present, the sooner you would be well advised to act on these problems and seek out some kind of help for your illness. Just as the term implies, this is an illness, and not some kind of marker that you are a bad person. You did not bring this on yourself, even though you are responsible for what you do about it and how you act to work with (and around) your illness.

Taking personal responsibility for yourself involves owning up to the possibility that you may have a problem that is beyond your power to solve on your own. Solving it is going to require admitting to having it, though. And while this is a major sticking point for a lot of people out there, it does not have to be the point where you stop admitting to what is possible and start denying it. After all, getting better involves admitting that you have the problem in the first place. And allowing some mysterious person’s opinion to rule over your life is not the way.

Once you admit that you have a problem, the next logical step that needs to be taken is to admit yourself to some sort of a treatment facility. Yes, that does mean that you are going to have to go to rehab, where you can not “just cut back” and where you are undoubtedly going to feel absolutely terrible in a lot of different ways. From the physical part to the part where you have got to admit (to everybody, including yourself) that you have a problem that is tougher than you are, it just plain sucks to have to go to rehab. But perhaps the worst part is in finding a good facility for the process itself.

Now, you are going to find a lot of rehab places that are going to talk about how comfortable and serene they are. In almost every possible scenario, you are going to be in a state in which you could not possibly care less about it. While external serenity is a whole lot easier than if you tried to keep going to work, being shouted at by the people who do not understand what you are going through, and simultaneously fighting off your urge to use and your physical pains, it is a little bit like getting ice cream after having your tonsils out; thanks, but no thanks.

You are also going to have to find a rehab facility that your insurance is going to pay for. While nobody really likes to talk about this part of the equation, it is inevitably going to come up at some point. You might as well get this big white elephant out there right now, before the situation gets really bad for you. After all, unpaid medical bills are a substantial problem for a lot of people. If they become a problem for you, it could cause you to relapse. Now as days there are a lot of online colleges that teaches Rehabilitation.

When you are addicted to alcohol or some other kind of drug, it is inevitable that someone who cares about you is going to strongly suggest that you get help. And in some cases, they might physically pick you up and haul you like a log over to the rehab center, while you futilely kick and scream about it. In a case such as that, your recovery is just going to be that much harder (as if it needed to have any additional challenges tacked onto it). What happens after rehab depends entirely on how you want to play the situation. For some people, rehab is just a traumatic break between periods of active addiction. For others, it is an actual turning point.

During your stint in rehab, you are going to run across a lot of different feelings, both physical and mental. Many of those feelings are going to scare you a lot, and it would be very easy for you to simply bear it through to the end, tell the doctors what they want to hear, get discharged, go home, and then get right on back to using. This is always going to be your choice, but you have to wonder whether it was worth all of that pain, just to go back to the same old stupidity.

At some level, you know that what you are doing is hurting you. It is not to say anything bad about you as a person. Please do not feel insulted here. You are merely sick, not bad. But ultimately, you are the person who is responsible for where you end up in life. If your life ends up being nothing more than one artificial good time after another, what is that? It’s no legacy, that’s for sure. And ultimately, while it will feel good for awhile, you will leave a lot of pain with others.

Addictions can be absolutely crippling. It’s hard to see someone go through it, or experience it yourself, so here’s a little bit of what to expect.

When you Should Go

When choosing whether to go to a detox facility or not, there’s really no right or wrong answer. Some people are more prone to addiction than others, so there’s no set amount of use that will signify addiction. Instead, you need to listen to your body. When drugs or alcohol are all you can think about or when you put yourself in harm’s way to get your fix, it’s absolutely time to get some help. Also, the quicker you get help the better off you will be. Even a preemptive strike could help you avoid the dangerous path to addiction.

How to Help Someone Else

It’s far easier to notice addiction in another person, rather than in yourself. You will notice mood swings, a change in behavior, appearance or personality, or a shift in priorities. If suddenly, someone is continually missing appointments, constantly looks tired or worn out, or starts acting different than normal, there could very well be something going on. So, simply start by approaching the person and asking them what’s happening. But don’t just accept any sort of excuse they throw at you, because not many people will flat out admit they have a problem.

What to Expect

When checking in to a rehab facility, the patient will be pulled away from all the opportunities they have to use their drug of choice. They will have a difficult time physically and mentally as their body flushes the toxins out of their system completely. It will be a dangerous time for them, so the best place to get help is through a rehab facility under the care of medical professionals. It will be a long and hard road to travel, but in the end it will save their life.

If you are addicted to some form of vice, then you might or might not intellectually realize that you are causing damage to yourself. But then again, while almost every person who is addicted for a long time realizes (even if it is only deep down) that they are hurting themselves, it is a very common occurrence for them to only see their addiction in terms of where they are with it. But of course, no human being is living in a vacuum. And ultimately, there are other people who are going to be hurt by your addiction, in some form or another.

For some people, they are going to be hurt because they legitimately care about you. For these people, they do not want to abandon you at any costs. But while their love for you keeps them close by, it is also the thing that hurts them so badly. If they did not care about you, your slow degradation (and the wasting of your life) would not especially bother them. But it does, and then some. After all, when you really care about another person, you love them as if they were a part of yourself. And when any part of a whole (such as a family) suffers, the entire thing suffers, too.

However, there are also other people who can be badly hurt by your addiction. In most cases, these people are strangers, who just happen to get into the proverbial crossfire of your addicted lifestyle. If you have ever driven while drunk or high, you have done a whole lot more than risk your own health and life. You have put all sorts of people whom you may never meet in danger, as well. And while you were undoubtedly in no condition to especially care about this risk you were putting others into, you could easily have changed their entire lives.

When you have an addiction, the entire world sees you as just another person. For those who want to look a little bit below the surface (such as the people who see you on a daily basis), they can usually end up seeing that there is some kind of problem there. While much of the world will eventually notice that you have an addiction of some sort, most people are not aware that addictions are nearly always the heralds of other things. When there is an addiction at the top, it is a temple built over a sewer. And that sewer stinks just as much as any other one does, no matter how carefully you try to cover it up.

For anything to ever be effective at treating your addiction, it has also got to target the underlying cause of what is making you feel bad in the first place. For many addicts, the notion of “having fun” is typically used as a cover for the real purpose of “not facing the pain which bubbles under the surface.” In the life of almost every person who ever used with any kind of seriousness, there is a lot of pain which they are very hesitant to face, let alone express. But if they are ever going to get any better, they are eventually going to have to face all of it.

After all, the act of facing your problems is the first step in overcoming them. While this is not something that you are likely to be able to do quickly (and it will certainly not be pleasant or convenient), it is the ultimate way to stop your reliance on some kind of chemical crutch. When the chemical crutches stop being how you run your life, the problem will look solved. But when the underlying problems are finally vanquished, it will stop being about the looks.
